Frida, 2002

Frida Kahlo’s dramatic 2002 biopic ‘Frida’ follows the life of the Mexican artist who steadily rose to fame as a self taught artist with the help of her husband, Diego Rivera.

The film begins as Frida is still at school and is involved in a bus crash that nearly has fatal effects. Frida survives and as she wears a body cast, she begins to decorate the plaster with butterflies, leading to her parents buying a drawing board when her cast no longer has any free room for her drawings. Events develop as Frida visits the already established artist Diego Rivera asking for constructive criticism and advice, which leads to their friendship and marriage. The remaining time of the films follows the couple as lasting effects of the crash causes Frida’s body to deteriorate and the impact and influence that that will have on her subjects and art, and when Frida begins to become a desired and popular artist.

For myself, I did not think that this film would be enjoyable, but the vibrant and loud individuals that the film has, creates complex relationships and connections influencing Frida and how her opinions and art change into a realistic and possibly pessimistic approach.
