Project 2, Exercise- Mixing materials into paint

After reading the brief for this exercise, I was looking forward to creating textures with household products that I had never experimented with before. With this, I firstly gathered a few products such as baby powder, salt, crushed peppercorns, rice, petals and foliage, and created patches of the materials mixed with acrylic, in order to get an idea of how they would look and the effects that they would create. This proved to be helpful as I was able to see whether these affects could be taken further in larger areas and if they would create relief and texture. Most of the materials proved to be extremely effect, especially the salt and peppercorns, but unfortunately, the petals did not make such a difference and the powder seemed only to work when a large amount was mixed with the acrylic, but did not create a noticeable texture, rather just a colour change.

With this in mind, I moved onto create three pages with a monochrome, autumnal and earthy colour scheme using mostly rice, peppercorns and salt as these materials created the best effects. Using different shades and colours helped to bring the materials out in a variety of ways and actual visibility of the materials. Once dried, I chose the autumnal piece to do further work on and used the effect of dry brush with a gold acrylic to compliment the warm colours and pronounce the relief effect which proved successful in lifting the materials and textures created, making areas stand out and producing a lovely finish.
