MOOD AND ATMOSPHERE

Before reading the research point, I had never come across Picasso’s Blue Period, which surprised me, as I found them so beautiful and alluring even when meant to be miserable and depressing. The way that Picasso seems to able to tell a story just with a model and a simple background creates a moving narrative of loneliness and desperation and a sense of waiting for something to happen and the inevitability of that something never appearing. Along with the blue tones, the use of grey creates a blank canvas on the face of the subject and gives the impression of an insanity awakening in their minds.

In complete contrast fauvism used many bright rich colours to create a dreamy cheerful, and in particular Henri Matisse used opaque pastel shades in order to capture a fairy tale like feeling, and happy loving scene, full of friendship and loyalty. The scattered brush marks next to Picasso’s tight marks seem to symbolise a kind of freedom within oneself, as if the blue figures only have themselves to blame, and the variation of colour and shade shows a vibrancy and eccentricity in fauvism, and the limitations of the blue restrict any other feeling than depression come into the life of the model.
