Project 1, Exercise- Dripping, dribbling and splattering

With this exercise, I was already familiar with the work of Jackson Pollock, admiring the random marks and results that he created in such an unplanned and unorganised fashion.

Knowing his work and an idea of how he had created these pieces, starting this exercise didn’t necessarily need any planning and was definitely more of a dive in sort of exercise where the results are not planned. My first piece was to get used to the idea of spreading colour on the page spontaneously, and I used diluted parker quink ink to get a base layer of colour and pattern across the page, and then proceed with a stronger and neat version of the ink to create more layers on top using a pipette to spread and dribble the ink across the page. Once this had dried I splattered watered acrylic across the page to create more interest than with just one colour and medium, and then proceeded onto three more paintings using watercolour, gouache and acrylic, using summery colours in one, and more autumnal, warm and bruised colours in the others.

With this technique, this could work extremely well in abstract work but also in background work, especially in portraits, and could also serve an interesting purpose in foliage included in landscapes.
