Effie Gray, 2014

Effie Gray is a 2014 biopic about the relationships between Euphemia Gray, John Ruskin and John Everett Millais. When Euphemia ‘Effie’ Gray marries art critic John Ruskin, she dreams of a life of happiness, love and children, but unfortunately instead she receives orders, mockery and a husband unwilling to complete the most intimate act of a marriage. When John Everett Millais, the Pre Raphaelite artist, is commissioned to paint John Ruskin himself, all three visit Scotland, Effie’s home country, and Effie is no longer the only one to notice her husband belittling and negligent nature.

This film is a beautiful depiction of art in the Victorian era and the importance of support and backing from established figures, but also the life that women had to lead where their opinions and feelings where just labelled hysterical and where they had to be careful about who they turned to as their confidant.
